Verbs ending in -éger have an alteration (é -> è) in some forms (before a silent syllable except for the future and conditional) : protéger / il protège but il protégera, il protégerait.
Just like the verbs similar to manger, the verbs following this pattern keep the "e" after "g" if they it is followed by vowels "a" or "o": il protégeait, nous protégeons.
